Fall School Lunch Ideas for a Kids Bento Box
Once the weather cools off, a lot of kids get tired of the same summer lunch rotation. Watermelon is out of season, the first chilly mornings show up, and suddenly the cold pasta salad that worked in August comes home untouched. Fall is a great time to refresh the lunch box with seasonal foods kids already like, without making packing any harder.
Here are easy fall school lunch ideas that fit neatly into a kids bento box and hold up until lunchtime.
Lean on fall fruit that travels well
Autumn fruit is sturdy, inexpensive, and easy to pack.
- Apples: slice and toss with a squeeze of lemon or a splash of apple juice to slow browning.
- Pears: pick ones that are just ripe, not soft, so they do not bruise in the backpack.
- Grapes: cut lengthwise for younger kids.
- Clementines: peel at home and separate into segments so they are quick to eat.
Pat cut fruit dry before it goes in, and give it its own compartment so the juice does not reach the crackers.
Swap in cozy, fall-flavored sides
A little seasonal flavor makes lunch feel new without adding prep time.
- Pumpkin or banana muffin, homemade or store-bought, cut in half
- Apple butter or cinnamon applesauce as a dip for pretzels or graham crackers
- Roasted sweet potato cubes from last night's dinner
- A small handful of popcorn or a seed-and-cereal trail mix (check your school's nut policy)
Use dinner leftovers on purpose
Fall dinners like roast chicken, turkey meatballs, and baked pasta make great next-day lunch. Cook a little extra, portion it into a lunch-sized serving while you clean up, and refrigerate it overnight. In the morning it is ready to go. If your child prefers lunch warm, pack hot foods in an insulated food jar, and keep the bento box for cold and room-temperature items.
Keep it cold, even when it is cool outside
It is easy to skip the ice pack once the temperature drops, but classrooms and backpacks are still warm. Anything with dairy, meat, eggs, or cut fruit should stay cold until lunch. Lay a slim ice pack flat against the lid or on top of the box so it cools the foods that need it most.
Five fall bento lunch combos
- Apple and cheddar: apple slices, cheddar cubes, whole-grain crackers, and a few pretzels
- Turkey roll-up box: turkey and cheese roll-ups, pear slices, cucumber rounds, and a mini muffin
- Leftover meatballs: turkey meatballs, a little marinara for dipping, carrot sticks, and grapes
- Pumpkin snack plate: half a pumpkin muffin, yogurt, clementine segments, and cheese stick
- Apple dip and dunk: graham crackers, apple butter or cinnamon applesauce, sliced apples, and string cheese
Pack wet and dry foods apart
Fall lunches often mix wet foods like applesauce, yogurt, or marinara with dry foods like crackers and muffins. Keep wet foods in a sealed compartment and dry foods on the other side. A divided box with a tight, leakproof lid keeps the sauce in its spot and the muffin from turning soggy.
Our kids leakproof stainless bento lunch box with cutlery has separate compartments and a sealed lid, so dips and applesauce stay put on the bus ride. Use code LAUNCH10 for 10% off, and US shipping is free on orders over $40.
Pick one or two fall foods your child already enjoys, add them to the usual rotation, and keep cold foods cold. A small seasonal change is often all it takes to bring empty lunch boxes back home.
